Fire Prevention and Safety
Home Exit Drills
Did you know: Most fatal fires happen between midnight and 8am. Toxic gases and heat can travel far ahead of the actual flames. When your smoke detectors sound you may have less than 2 ½ minutes to get out.
Plan your escape- Draw an outline of your home. Show important details: stairs, hallways, roofs. These can be used as fire escapes. Choose a family meeting place and show it on the plan
Inspection- check each bedroom for the best window or door for an emergency escape. Test windows
Finish your escape plan- Use different colored arrows to show the normal way out versus your emergency exits.
Determine the family meeting place.
Always remember: Sleep with your bedroom door closed. Stay low. Once you're out, STAY OUT.

Cooking
Did you know: According to the U.S. Fire administration approximately 185,600 structure fires are caused by cooking.
How to prevent: Never leave your cooking unattended. Always remember to turn your burner or oven off.
Important tip: When cooking with oil, butter or other greasy foods Do Not attempt to extinguish with water. Small grease fires can be extinguished by placing a cover on the pan or using a fire extinguisher.
Home Heating Equipment
Proper maintenance is extremely important with space heaters, fuel burning appliances, wood burning appliances etc. Maintenance and annual inspections can prevent fires and save lives. Follow the Manufacturers instruction for installation, venting, fueling, maintenance and repair. Never plug in portable heaters to extension cords, always directly into a wall outlet.
Important tips: Keep furnishings and other combustibles 36 inches from all heating sources.
Chimney
Chimneys are one of the most common locations of residential structure fires. However, nearly all residential chimney fires can be prevented.
Maintenance: Good maintenance is very important. Have your chimney checked every year by a qualified chimney professional. Burn only well seasoned hardwoods. Install a chimney cap. Ensure that your chimney has the appropriate liner.
Be prepared: If you suspect a chimney fire, evacuate your home and call 9-1-1.
